The Short Answer

Updated

Microneedling builds collagen through micro-channels and suits acne scars, pores and texture on most skin tones, with 1–3 days of redness. Chemical peels dissolve outer layers to treat pigmentation and sun damage, with up to 7 days of peeling. Laser resurfacing like Fotona CO₂ works most dramatically on wrinkles and scars but has the longest downtime, so in Florida we schedule it October–March.

All three treatments prompt your skin to renew itself, but they work at different depths and come with different trade-offs. Microneedling builds collagen through controlled micro-channels — from our medical-grade precision microneedling to Morpheus8 RF microneedling when tightening is the goal. A chemical peel dissolves the outer layers to even out pigment and clear congestion. Laser resurfacing delivers the most dramatic surface change, and asks the most of your calendar around Florida's sun. Here's how they compare at our North Miami and Palm Beach Gardens clinics — and how we help you choose.

A closer look at each option.

Microneedling and Morpheus8

Our precision microneedling uses an automated device with adjustable depth (0.5–2.5mm) and infuses either a multivitamin or a hyaluronic serum into the fresh channels. A typical course is 3–4 sessions, four weeks apart, with visible improvement at 4–6 weeks as collagen continues to remodel. When loose skin along the jaw or neck is part of the picture, Morpheus8 adds radiofrequency heat 1–8mm deep — our Morpheus8 vs microneedling guide explains exactly where the two differ.

Chemical peels

Peels are the most adaptable and accessible of the three. A light peel can brighten dull skin with little or no downtime, while a medium-depth peel reaches further for pigmentation, sun damage and post-acne marks, with 3–7 days of peeling. Our Aurelia Glow Peel is a medical-grade peel customized to your skin. If you're weighing a peel against a no-downtime facial instead, see our HydraFacial vs chemical peel comparison.

Laser and light resurfacing

The Fotona CO₂ laser fractionally resurfaces the skin at 10,600nm, treating thousands of microscopic columns while leaving the surrounding skin intact to speed healing. It's the most transformative option here for wrinkles, acne scars and sun-damaged texture — see our dedicated page on CO₂ laser resurfacing in Miami. Fotona 4D, offered through our Fotona laser clinic in Miami, combines Nd:YAG and Er:YAG wavelengths to lift, tighten and brighten with lighter downtime. And an IPL photofacial uses broadband light to fade sun spots, freckling and redness.

So which should you choose?

Choose microneedling if…

Your priorities are acne scars, pores, texture and firmness, you have a deeper skin tone, or you want a collagen treatment that's easier to keep up through the Florida summer. Step up to Morpheus8 when laxity is part of the goal.

Choose a chemical peel if…

Your main concerns are pigmentation, sun damage, dullness or breakouts, you want the most accessible starting point, and you can plan around a few days of flaking for a medium-depth peel.

Choose laser resurfacing if…

You want the most dramatic change for wrinkles, deeper scarring or sun-damaged texture, a lift-and-brighten protocol like Fotona 4D, or targeted clearing of sun spots with IPL — and you can book in the cooler, lower-UV months.

Honestly, there's no single winner. The right treatment is the least intensive one that can realistically reach your goal — and that depends on your concern, your skin tone, your downtime and the time of year. If you're leaning toward CO₂, read our CO₂ laser recovery day-by-day guide first so you know what the first two weeks look like before you book.

Can You Combine Them?

Yes — with the right sequence and the right season

Some of the best results come from a sequenced plan rather than a single treatment — just not on the same day. A common approach pairs a structural series (Morpheus8, Fotona 4D or CO₂) with lighter peels or microneedling in between to keep tone and texture on track, spaced according to how your skin heals. In South Florida, timing matters as much as sequencing: freshly treated skin is vulnerable to UV, and sun exposure while healing is a major driver of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Whatever you choose, daily broad-spectrum SPF is part of the treatment. Q & A

Frequently asked questions.

Which is better for acne scars: microneedling, a chemical peel or laser?+

For textured acne scars (rolling, boxcar or ice-pick), collagen-building treatments usually outperform peels. Precision microneedling is a strong starting point for mild-to-moderate scarring, while Morpheus8 RF microneedling and fractional Fotona CO₂ resurfacing are the more powerful options for deeper scars. Chemical peels are better suited to the flat red or brown marks that breakouts leave behind. Many scar plans combine approaches over several months, and results vary from person to person.

Which treatment is safest for darker skin tones?+

Microneedling and Morpheus8 are generally the most predictable choices for deeper skin tones because they don't rely on light energy that targets melanin. Conservative settings and diligent aftercare still matter, since deeper skin is more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Light chemical peels can work well with careful product selection. Ablative lasers like CO₂ carry a higher risk of pigment changes on medium to deep tones, and IPL is best suited to lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick I–III), so we screen carefully and may recommend an alternative.

How much downtime does each treatment have?+

Precision microneedling: 1–3 days of mild redness. Morpheus8: 2–5 days of redness with faint grid marks. Light chemical peels: none to 1 day; medium-depth peels: 3–7 days of peeling. Fotona CO₂: 2–5 days for lighter settings, up to 7–10 days for deeper resurfacing. Fotona 4D: 2–7 days depending on intensity. IPL: brown spots darken, then flake off over 5–10 days.

When is the best time of year for these treatments in South Florida?+

We usually schedule Fotona CO₂ courses between October and March, and Fotona 4D and IPL courses between October and April, so healing skin isn't exposed to peak summer UV. Microneedling, Morpheus8 and light peels are easier to fit into the warmer months as long as you commit to daily broad-spectrum SPF, shade and a hat. We avoid IPL on actively tanned skin in any season.

How much do microneedling, chemical peels and laser resurfacing cost at Aurelia?+

Our Aurelia Glow Peel is $185. Morpheus8 RF microneedling starts from $1,200 per session, with a 3-session course at $3,200, and Fotona 4D starts from $1,200 per session, with a 3-pack at $3,200. Precision microneedling, Fotona CO₂ resurfacing and IPL photofacial pricing is confirmed at your consultation. Cherry and Care Credit financing are available for treatment plans.

Is Morpheus8 the same as microneedling?+

Morpheus8 is microneedling plus radiofrequency. Standard precision microneedling reaches 0.5–2.5mm and relies on the micro-channels alone, while Morpheus8's gold-tipped needles reach 1–8mm and deliver RF heat that contracts and remodels collagen, adding skin tightening for the jawline, neck and deeper scars. It costs more and has a little more downtime (2–5 days of redness versus 1–3 days), so we recommend it when laxity or deep scarring is part of the goal.
